The Trustees, after consulting paediatricians, health workers, doctors and communal leaders in Mbale and the Eastern region of Uganda, have decided, as their first project, to develop a hospital/treatment centre for children with HIV/AIDS in Mbale Town. The hospital will be the first of its kind in that part of Uganda and will cater for those children affected by the disease in the eastern and north-eastern regions of the country, who currently receive no help. In 2007 the trustees purchased, for just under $300,000, a large plot of land in the centre of Mbale Town with a partially- completed building on it. In 2009, the building was renovated throughout so that is it now suitable for use as a healthcare facility for children affected by HIV/AIDS. The hospital will also be a focus for outreach services to the rural areas of the region. This will be a crucial service as the vast majority of families live in the countryside and are prevented from accessing the limited mainstream services in town through poor road links and the lack of money to pay for transport. The hospital will set up a computerised database working in conjunction with existing local service providers to ensure that children and their families are monitored and where possible treated at home. |
